Searching Medline with Medical Subject Headings (MESH) for Neurological Surgery

Suggestions for searching Medline....

In PubMed Medline and Ovid Medline, the term "Neurosurgery" refers to the specialty of Neurological Surgery, not surgical procedures. To search for procedures use "Neurosurgical Procedures"

  • Use the MESH terminology to search PubMed or Ovid Medline (see the attached PDF of neurosurgical terminology)
  • Start with the most specific term and if that does not work, then try a broader term.
  • You can search for ANY neurosurgical procedure by adding the subheading /surgery to an anatomical site/organ e.g. Peripheral Nerves/surgery.
